Enjoy organic soaps and essential oils while supporting the fight against Malaria
About Us Uganics is an award winning social enterprise utilizing everyday products to create impact straight at the core of the problem. We produce an organic long-lasting mosquito repellent soap that especially helps mothers in rural communities with children below the age of five to prevent malaria from mosquito bites. In addition to our products, we facilitate awareness campaigns and work with local hospitals to teach young mothers how to prevent Malaria. (merged with the impact) The social enterprise was founded by Joan Nalubega who has herself suffered from Malaria during her childhood. She has just been named one of the Top 10 Finalists of Africa’s Business Heroes – a competition organized by the Jack Ma Foundation which recognizes impactful and innovative entrepreneurs in Africa. The Uganda based company has also been supported by the global pharmaceutical and consumer goods company "Johnson & Johnson" with their expertise as well as a grant to increase production facilities.
In addition to the soaps, Uganics are starting new product lines - which will be available to our campaign backers first. With the new product lines we aim to support and empower more than 30 women in local communities to grow and extract the essential oils hence securing employment for them. To date, we have worked with over 37 women in Mpigi and Wakiso Districts who grow herbs on their own land, extracting the oils from them and supplying them to Uganics to be used in our production processes. We have reached more than one million people with our soaps and created 30 jobs for youth and women in the process, with this campaign, we want to impact more than 50,000 people by early 2021.
According to the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Uganda, clinically diagnosed malaria is the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in Uganda, accounting for 30-50% of outpatient visits at health facilities, 15-20% of all hospital admissions and up to 20% of all hospital deaths.
Uganda has the highest reported malaria transmission in the world, with around 11.4 million cases in 2018 alone (WHO, 2020) and over 10,500 deaths annually.
Malaria is a big problem and we need to solve it in as many ways as we can. Our way at Uganics goes all the way to the core of the problem and prevents people from getting mosquito bites that would threaten their lives.
Price insensitive tourists are an important part of our business model. With the ongoing Corona Virus Pandemic, a major part of our profit-generating business model practically vanished during one of the biggest global sanitary crises of our time. At the same time, the demand for our subsidized community bars is rising, making it challenging to keep the soaps affordable.
If we can raise $50,000 we will be able to cross-finance soaps for 50,000 people. We employ a social business model that allows us to sell our products at a higher price to high income earners and then use these profits to cross-finance and subsidize our soap to mothers in rural communities so they can buy them at the same price as ordinary soap.
All funds raised from the patron package and the 5 EUR gift will be used to provide free soaps to a local refugee camp and an orphanage. Profits from all other packages will be used to cross-finance soaps for poor rural communities to ensure they can buy soaps at very affordable prices.
